Impact of increasing carbon dioxide on dinitrogen and carbon fixation rates under oligotrophic conditions and simulated upwelling

چکیده

Dinitrogen (N2) fixation is a major source of bioavailable nitrogen to oligotrophic ocean communities. Yet, we have limited understanding how ongoing climate change could alter N2 fixation. Most our based on short-term laboratory experiments conducted individual N2-fixing species whereas community-level approaches are rare. In this longer-term in situ mesocosm study, aimed improve the role rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and simulated deep water upwelling (C) rates natural plankton community. We deployed nine mesocosms subtropical North Atlantic Ocean enriched seven these with CO2 yield range treatments (partial pressure CO2, pCO2 = 352–1025 μatm). measured C both light dark incubations over 55-day study period. High negatively impacted phase before upwelling, while effect reversed bloom decay after added nutrients were consumed. Dust deposition nutrient-rich increased nifH gene abundances selected clades including unicellular diazotrophic cyanobacterium clade UCYN-B. Elevated phase. conclude that elevated pulses pronounced effects diazotrophy primary producers, dust modify assemblages.

Climate impact of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide.

The global temperature rose by 0.2 degrees C between the middle 1960's and 1980, yielding a warming of 0.4 degrees C in the past century. This temperature increase is consistent with the calculated greenhouse effect due to measured increases of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Variations of volcanic aerosols and possibly solar luminosity appear to be primary causes of observed fluctuations about the...

Functional significance of dinitrogen fixation in sustaining coral productivity under oligotrophic conditions.

Functional traits define species by their ecological role in the ecosystem. Animals themselves are host-microbe ecosystems (holobionts), and the application of ecophysiological approaches can help to understand their functioning. In hard coral holobionts, communities of dinitrogen (N2)-fixing prokaryotes (diazotrophs) may contribute a functional trait by providing bioavailable nitrogen (N) that...

Sustainable synthesis of amino acids by catalytic fixation of molecular dinitrogen and carbon dioxide†

The industrial process of nitrogen fixation is complex and results in a huge economic and environmental impact. It requires a catalyst and high temperature and pressure to induce the rupture of the strong N–N bond and subsequent hydrogenation. On the other hand, carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere has become a priority objective due to the high amount of global carbon dioxide emissions (...

Kinetics and Apparent K(m) of Oxygen Cycle under Conditions of Limiting Carbon Dioxide Fixation.

A mass spectrometer with a membrane inlet was used to monitor light-driven O(2) evolution, O(2) uptake, and CO(2) uptake in suspensions of algae (Scenedesmus obliquus). We observed the following. (a) The rate of O(2) uptake, which, in the presence of iodoacetamide, replaces the uptake of CO(2), showed a distinct plateau (V(max)) beyond approximately 30% O(2) and was half-maximal at approximatel...
